Lesser banishing ritual of the pentagram
The lesser banishing ritual of the pentagram (LBRP) was originally a preliminary ritual designed by the Golden Dawn to prepare the practitioner and working space for further magical, ritual and meditative work. It has become a mainstay of ceremonial magick and the ritual has been adapted and utilised by other groupings within paganism to become one of the best known ceremonial magick rituals.
It is believed the Golden Dawn used the works of Eliphas Levi to construct the ritual and he in turn based his work on a Jewish prayer.
Its aim is to clear and purify the practitioner and working space from the chaotic nature of life and instill a sense of power and connection to the divine in the practitioner. In some ways it is similar to a witch casting a circle, in the sense the ritual serves to create a space worthy of magickal acts, raises energy and possible communion with deities.
The ritual is divided into three main parts. In the first part, the adherent acknowledges the power of the divine through use of the well known prayer, ”Thou art the Kingdom, Power and Glory, for ever. Amen.”
The second section sees the adherent formulate a protective barrier that also doubles as purifying the adherent and working space.
The third section of the ritual serves to remind the practitioner of the power inherent in them and their connection to the divine, along with the protection offered by that connection.
Face East. As you begin to speak, imagine a bright, brilliant light descend from above. All words should be intoned with the intent of having them vibrate to the edges of the universe. A dagger may be held in the hand.
Touch the forehead and vibrate ATEH (thou art). As you do so, imagine the white light coming down to the crown of your head.
Touch the solar plexus and vibrate MALKUTH (Kingdom). The light descends to your feet and forms a sphere beneath your feet.
Touch the right shoulder and vibrate VE-GEVURAH (and Power). Imagine a sphere of light appearing just next to the right shoulder.
Touch the left shoulder and vibrate VE-GEDULAH (and glory). A shaft of light emerges from the sphere of light at the right shoulder and crosses the breast to form another sphere at the left shoulder.
Close your hands together and vibrate LE-OLAHM (for ever). Imagine the cross of light extending throughout your body.
With the hands joined together and pointing upwards, vibrate AMEN.
In the Golden Dawn version, a dagger is used to trace the pentagrams.
Face East. Draw a banishing pentagram (see image) and bring the point of the dagger or your hand to rest at the centre of the pentagram. Vibrate Y H V H (pronounced YOD HEY VAU HEY).
Trace a semi-circle with the dagger as you turn to the South. Trace a banishing pentagram and bring the dagger to rest at the centre again. Vibrate ADNI (pronounced AH-DOH-NEYE).
Trace a semicircle to the West and trace the banishing pentagram. Vibrate AHIH (pronounced EH-YEH).
Trace a semicircle to the North and trace the banishing pentagram. Vibrate the name AGLA (pronounced AH-GAH-LAH or ATAH GIBOR LE-OLAHM ADONAI)
Trace a semicircle to the East bringing the dagger to rest at the centre of the eastern (first) pentagram.
Remain facing East. Say, “Before me…” and vibrate the name RAPHAEL (pronounced RAH-PHYE-EHL). Imagine the archangel Raphael before you in brilliant white light. He holds a magical sword with the point upright and behind him is a pale, yellow background. Cherubs can be imagined near Raphael if you wish. A light breeze cleanses and purifies the air.
Then say, “Behind me…” and vibrate the name GABRIEL (pronounced GAH-BREE-EHL). The archangel holds in their right hand a silver chalice and stands on a deep blue ocean with aquatic creatures nearby. Imagine the mist and the spray from the ocean .
Then say, “At my right hand…” and vibrate the name MICHAEL (pronounced MEE-CHYE-EHL). The archangel on your right, facing you, holds in their right hand a red wand with a pure diamond top. The background is colored scarlet, red and orange. Imagine feeling the fire and heat from the South.
Then say, “At my left hand…” and vibrate the name AURIEL (pronounced AWE-REE-EHL). An archangel on your left faces you and holds in their hands a pentacle/disk with a white pentagram traced in its center. The ground is brown. Feel the solidity of the earth and think of the earthiness of scene.
Now say, “About me flames the pentagrams and in the column shines the six rayed star.”
Imagine a circle of white light about you whose quadrants are the four pentagrams you traced. At the centre is the cross of light extended throughout the body.
Repeat the Kabbalistic Cross (part one of the ritual).
